KOKESHI are hand carved Japanese wooden dolls. Originally produced in areas in the Tohoku region they likely originated from woodworker scraps in the 1800s. Each of the twelve styles have their own motifs. They are minimalist in design with no arms or legs. Many Kokeshi are elegantly painted and have been collectable in the U.S. since the 1940s.
